Well, sometimes mailing lists fall through the cracks, or in between the cushions and the end of the couch, and sometimes even into the spam filter. This just happens to be one of them worth taking a look at!
But what is it that makes Corra so special? Well, before we even go there, let’s remember that 2007 was an amazing vintage for California cabernet sauvignon. This goes without saying, and everyone is still ranting and raving about it, but is it true? I wish I knew, however, we haven’t drank any ’07 cabs yet. Time will definitely tell in the future though.
So back to Corra, they are sourcing great fruit, and have one heck of an awesome winemaker crafting these wines. Celia Welch’s resume speaks for itself, and she was named the Winemaker of the Year in 2008. Her most noteworthy accomplishment as of late is the work that she has done at Scarecrow. But let’s not forget about all the great wines she has crafted at wineries such as Lindstrom, Rocca, Staglin, Hartwell, Cornerstone, Hollywoord & Vine, and Keever just to name a few. She is an amazing woman, and a heck of a great winemaker!
With that being said, below is the letter that I received, cut and pasted below regarding their Spring 2010 offering of the 2007 Corra cabernet sauvignon. I’m not sure how many of the 6 I was allocated I am going to take, but this is one not to be missed! Cheers! -F. Scott
Vineyard and Winemaking:
The 2007 Corra Cabernet was crafted from vineyards on Pritchard Hill, in Rutherford, and in Oakville. The fruit, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, was harvested between September 4 and October 1, 2007. The fruit was entirely hand-harvested, then double-sorted prior to fermentation. The fermentations were extended to about 28 days total maceration, then gently pressed and put to barrels for about 22 months in small French barrels (90% new.) The wine was bottled in July 2009 without fining or filtration. A total of 375 cases were produced.
Tasting notes:
The 2007 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon displays provocative aromas of spiced raspberry and ripe blackberry, sweet tea, vanilla, cinnamon and sage notes, intermixed with a touch of cocoa/mocha adding depth to the gloriously sweet fruit. On the palate, this multi-dimensional wine offers a full, luscious entry with impressive concentration, displaying all the ripe blackberry and cherry intensity that is characteristic of the 2007 vintage. The mid-palate is full, rich, and opulent, supported by a harmonious tannin profile that is structural as well as silky. The juicy fruit flavors are pure and vibrant, with dark cherry notes that linger on the seductive finish.

Textbook-perfect growing conditions from pruning season through harvest yielded pristine, intensely flavorful grapes come September. Aromatic, fully ripe, dense and concentrated, the 2007 Corra, fashioned from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, displays the dark structural character of its hillside origins as well as the softer, more seductive and ethereal tones of the western benchlands of Oakville and Rutherford.
