Day 3: Hot Dog Challenge! 3 Days, 6 brands! What hot dog will reign supreme?

I have to say that after eating hot dogs for the last 3 days for lunch in the office, the last thing I wanted to do was fire up the grill today, and eat yet another hot dog!  But it had to be done, and we had to find a clearly defined winner in the quest to find out “which hot dog reigns supreme.”

So with that said, I once again fired up the grill at 11:30AM this morning, and prepared the dogs to hit the grill.  The semi-finalists for the challenge came down to the Hebrew National, versus the Sabrett.  These two were neck and neck throughout the taste test, and the ones that everyone had come back.  Would these dogs however be that different in a side by side taste test?  Well, we are about to find out.

The dogs were once again cooked the same on the grill as they were last week.  The grill was searing hot, and the dogs would be cooked to a nice char.  Again, both dogs would be topped with the same ingredients, that included mustard, ketchup, relish, and onion.  Some used all of these ingredients, while others did not, but they prepared both hot dogs the same.

In my mind, I had a clear cut favorite from last week, but I was keeping an open mind to see if I could be proved differently.  After my mind was made up, we went around the office to see what others had thought, and I was pretty shocked to hear that many of the judges had agreed with me.  In my opinion last week, the Hebrew National was the clear cut victor.  I thought that I might be the only one to change my mind and pick the Sabrett as the clearly defined favorite.  However, at a margin of 6 to 1, the victor of the 2010 Logistics Readiness Flight Hot Dog Show Down was indeed the Sabrett.  Congratulations!

In tasting these side by side, the Sabrett just had a better beef taste.  How do you really describe how a hot dog tastes in the first place?  It is hard to do, but  we all just knew which dog we preferred.

So in recap, 4 days, and 6 different brands of hot dogs, the battle has been settled, and the Sabrett brand hot dog reigns supreme!  I can now say that I have no desire to eat a hot dog again for a very long time!  LOL!  Now we’ll see what competition will come next!  Bratwurst perhaps?  Flannery burger blends?  There probably won’t be another contest, but you just never know!  Hope everyone enjoyed reading this, and found it educational!  Now, my question to you is, what is your favorite hot dog?  Cheers!  -F. Day 3: Hot Dog Challenge! 3 Days, 6 brands! What hot dog will reign supreme

Well, Day 3 of the hot dog challenge is here and gone! The dogs left today were the classic Ballpark and the Dietz and Watson. The Ballpark is a combination of turkey, pork and beef, whereas the Dietz and Watson was 100% beef.


As I expected today, these dogs really wouldn’t have too much affect on the overall crown of the “Best Hot Dog,” but even so, I tried to keep an open mind.

Unfortunately today, we lost two of our judges, Holly and Austyn as they were absolutely “hot dogged out.” In all actuality, I really can’t blame them, and I guarantee I won’t be grilling up any hot dogs this weekend! LOL! I did however pick up two new judges, another one of the Senior Master Sergeants from AES, as well as one of our Major’s who works in Logistics.

The grill was fired up at 11:30AM, and I let the coals get nice and hot. I threw the dogs on sometime after Noon, and we were ready to eat by 12:20. It was actually pretty easy to tell which dogs were which as the Ballpark plumped up nicely. Both dogs got a good char as the grill was nice and hot today.

Again, I dressed my dogs the same as the two previous days, and the taste test began. At this point, I wasn’t sure which dog was which, and I didn’t go out of my way to figure it out until I had tasted them both. Once I figured it out, it was determined that the Dietz and Watson had the better taste to me. It was meatier, and it was much cleaner! It tasted like real beef, opposed to just a hodgepodge of “meat parts. Even so, neither of the hot dogs were bad, and I ended up eating a half of each of them after I finished the whole hot dogs.

So what does that mean about the hot dog challenge? What are the final results? Which hot dog will reign supreme? Well, there were a few factors that came in to play here. First and foremost, I picked my favorite hot dog by comparing my Day 1, 2, and 3 winners. Although the Dietz and Watson was good, it really did not factor into the equation. The other judges did the exact same thing, and the votes were tallied! Once the votes were tallied, we came to a consensus, and that consensus was that: THE HOT DOG CHALLENGE IS TOO CLOSE TO CALL!!!!!!! What can I say baby? There is going to be a playoff for the first place crown! So that being said, stay tuned on Monday when The Hebrew Nationals face off against the Sabrett for the title! There can only be one winner, but at this point in time, we have to take it to overtime! It is just too close to call, so stay tuned on Monday! There will only be one champion! Cheers!

DAY 2: Hot Dog Challenge! 3 Days, 6 brands! What hot dog will reign supreme?

OK, so here we are on Thursday, and the Fuels Challenge Coin was flipped to determine what hot dogs would battle it out head to head. The coin toss revealed that the Sabrett would duke it out with the Nathan’s Famous. Both hot dogs were skinless beef franks. Both hot dogs were 170 calories each, and both hot dogs came 8 to a pack.

I fired up the grill once again, filled with Kingsford charcoal around 11AM, and headed to the base commissary to purchase some Freihofer’s buns. Again, we have to keep everything consistent, with the exception of the hot dogs themselves. Again, everyone was briefed to use the same toppings as yesterday, and again, used mustard, ketchup, onion, and relish.

By the time I came back from the commissary, the grill was plenty hot, and the hot dogs went on. Due to the ghetto fabulousness of our grill here in the office, the hot dogs were laid with the grate, opposed to against the grate so they would not roll off the front of the grill, or off the side of the grill and into the coals. Needless to say, the dogs went on, and cooked away. When I thought they were cooked to my liking, I pulled them off the grill, and brought them inside to our panel of judges. These were the same judges that we had yesterday.

Everyone prepared their hot dogs the same way as yesterday, and it was time to let the tasting begin. There was a wide array of comments today. Most of the judges agreed that the Nathan’s Famous were squishy and mushy when you bit into them. The texture wasn’t nearly as firm as the Sabrett, and the Sabrett had a bit of a snap to it.

From a taste standpoint however, we were split right down the middle to me. Holly, Cheryl, and Linda thought that the Nathan’s tasted better to them than the Sabrett. Upon first taste, Joe agreed with them as well, but later changed his mind to agree with Austyn and myself, that the Sabrett tasted better. For me, I liked the snap of the Sabrett, and it just had a cleaner, meatier taste. It tasted more like good beef to me than the Nathan’s Famous to me, and really picked up the grilled flavor. I don’t know quite how to describe it, but it just had a cleaner, purer taste to me, and in saying that, it sounds like it makes no sense whatsoever. Hopefully I can come up with the words to better describe what I mean.

So, all in all, a champion will be crowned tomorrow, and who knows for sure who it will be.  Currently, I have a favorite between yesterday's and today's winner in my head, but the majority is going to rule!  Which hot dog will reign supreme?  Well, we'll find out tomorrow!  Cheers!  -F. Scott

DAY 1: Hot Dog Challenge! 3 Days, 6 brands! What hot dog will reign supreme?

The subject here says it all, and the picture at the left tells the story of the competitors...or so we thought!

What originally started out as a hot dog grill out for as a going away for one Master Sergeant who was mobilized to McGuire Air Force Base, NJ from Minneapolis for the last 6 months has turned into a hot dog showdown!  Having 3 dozen leftover slider buns from the Stefania tasting at our home this past weekend, I didn't want those buns to go to waste, so at the last minute, I changed the hot dogs on the menu to sliders.  That said, we had Hebrew National hot dogs in the fridge that I would cook a day later.

Unfortunately, or fortunately perhaps, that 7 pack of hot dogs would not be enough, so I ran over to our commissary on base to grab another pack of hot dogs so we could all have two dogs a piece for lunch.  Instead of grabbing the same kind of dogs, I had my heart set on grabbing the Boars Head Natural Casing Pork and Beef Franks, and I did.

On my way to the bread aisle however, I had to stop and see what other kind of hot dogs the commissary had on the shelves, and that was when I saw both the Nathan's Famous as well as the Sabrett.  These are both brands that I have heard of.  Nathan's are obviously famous from the the massive hot dog eating contest held annually on Coney Island in Brooklyn, while Sabrett seems to be the Vienna Beef (the famous hot dog of the coveted Chicago style dog) of New York.  Unfortunately, Vienna Beef dogs are not available here on the East Coast, and even if they were, it would be unfair to put them into a competition like this as they would be the hands down winner.  OK, maybe not, but in all honesty, they need to be boiled, and topped with Chicago style toppings, not grilled!

So now that all of that is out of the way, let's talk about day one:  The rules for today were simple.  First, I fired up the grill with some Kingsford charcoal.  The grill was cleaned, and the hot dogs were selected.  Today's dogs that I selected were the Hebrew National - vs- the Boars Head.  The dogs will be grilled to a nice char, and will be sampled by a panel of judges:  myself, Holly, Austyn, Cheryl, and Joe.  The hot dogs will all be served on the same type of hot dog bun, and each judge will use the exact same toppings on all of the different brands of hot dogs.  The only toppings furnished to the judges are mustard, ketchup, onion, and relish.  I know, real connoisseur don't use ketchup, but you can learn a lot about a person who puts ketchup on a hot dog!  ;-)

So the dogs came off the grill when I thought they were cooked perfectly.  They had a nice char on them, and had some nice, crisp, burn marks on them in various places.  They also had nice grill marks on them.

While grilling the dogs, Austyn came up to the grill and immediately pointed at the Boars Head dogs and said that "those are not all beef."  Hell of a good eye!  One of the funny things about all of this however is that I was the only one who knew the actual identity of the brands until after everyone had made their decisions.  So with that being said, let's talk results!

The verdict or today is that 4 our of 5 people preferred the all beef Hebrew National Dogs to the Pork and Beef Blend of the Boars Head in the natural casing.  Now lets talk about comments from the judges:

Per Holly:  "OK, the Boars Head: the skin had that great snap when you bit into it and a nice smooth texture, but I definitely preferred the taste of the Hebrew's. All beef for me :) "  Her husband Austyn however preferred the taste of the Boars Head, and I think it is obvious that he prefers the blend of meats in a hot dog compared to the 100% beef.  Needless to say, there is nothing wrong with that!

For me, I have to agree with Holly.  The beef had better flavor to me, but the "snap" on the Boars Head as you bit into it was indeed very nice!  This reminded me of the Best Brand hot dogs that I used to eat while working on Fort Monmouth.

So at the end of day 1, it seems as though the Hebrew Nationals have the lead.  BUT, what the judges have to do is pick another winner tomorrow, and then be able to remember and compare that winner to what we have eaten today.  BUT, I am going to throw one more twist into this!  After buying all the interesting brands of dogs that our commissary carries, I stopped at the local Acme on the way home, and picked up yet again two more brands of hot dogs.  First, Dietz and Watson as this is yet another name you hear often, as well as the classic Ballpark Frank!  The way I see it, tomorrow is only Thursday, and that leaves Friday to do some more grilling, so yes, you guessed it, we're going to a 6 dog show down baby!  Stay tuned as there is much more to come!  A flip of a United States Air Force challenge coin will determine which two dogs will go head to head tomorrow!  Cheers!  -F.
