2005 Stefania Syrah Eaglepoint Ranch

If there is one wine from the Stefania lineup that I have been dying to try more than any other, it has been this one.  Why you ask?  Well, simply because I was not quick enough to sign up for their mailing list in time to get an offer for this wine.

When the box of wines Paul and Stefania sent out ahead of time contained one of these, I cannot tell you how excited I was.  More than anything, I wanted to see how Paul's winemaking style has changed from this, his first wine, to his newest 2008's that we would sample later in the evening.

Popped and poured, this wine had a gorgeous, dark, garnet color in the glass.  Nice black fruits on the nose, with some currant, mocha, sprice, and pepper.  Dark cherry filled out the nose, and I never would have guessed that this wine was an '05.

On the palate, nice black fruits shine though.  Lots of black cherry and maybe some boysenberry or blackberry.  Some spice and black peppery on the lingering finish made this very enjoyable.  This wine may not be as well rounded and complex as Paul's current wines, but this was definitely a joy to try for the first time.  Easily 3-5 years left in this wine, and probably even more.  If you have them, drink or hold.  91 points!  Cheers!
